Speaking of goals for the new year… how about 4.6+ million dollars of new tourism?

One of my big things last year was  to share the opportunity that our new San Diego – Japan connection brings to our tourism businesses.

Japanese tourism is on the rise in San Diego

Japanese tourism is on the rise in San Diego

Here’s why I think this is so important…

VisitCalifornia.com reports that, “Japan remains California’s third-largest overseas market with 590,000 visitors in 2012, with projections for 2013 up 3.3 percent. (= 609,470)

On average, Japanese travelers to the Golden State stay 7.6 days and spend $1,969 per visitor per trip ($259 per day).

Collectively, visitors from Japan spend $1.2 billion, making Japan California’s second-biggest overseas spending market after China.”

The good news is that since the launch of the DreamLiner last June, the returns have been even better than earlier projections.

“+8.2% in July, +3.4% in August and 4.7% in September. New non-stop flights to San Jose, San Diego and Denver have pushed up demand.”

According to Japan Airlines, they are now flying at 89% capacity.

That means that there are an estimated 5,850 Asian tourists arriving in San Diego each month.

At $259 per day times 7.6 days that equals $11,515,140 per month.

But even with all of this revenue potential, people are still pretty much in the dark about what Japanese tourists are looking for in their time in sunny San Diego.

Here’s a great survey that should help to demystify the subject

Survey Results

3. Family including kids 15% (average 12%)
4. Friends (more than 3) 7% (average 11%)
5. Friends 6% (average 11%)

Did you notice what happened to the topic of Shopping?

It looks like it simply vanished.

To me, that means two things.

1. There is a lot of potential there.

2. When these travelers get here we aren’t inviting them into our stores.

Below, I’ve included a few easy email templates that you can use to do just that.

Put these on your website or on other social media sites to build search relevance for your business or send them to your Japanese customers to keep in touch.

By doing so you will be helping me meet my goal of educating people on this opportunity and hopefully building a marketing advantage that will benefit your business for years to come.

All I ask is that if you get some good results – please let me know.

I’d love to hear your feedback as I’m sure would everybody else.

All the best to you and yours,

Jeremiah Magone
