My wife still rolls her eyes when I put soy sauce on my rice.
Even though it tastes good, I’ve learned that it goes against the esthetic of Japanese food.
Japanese people enjoy the presentation of a dish just as much as they enjoy its taste.
So it’s very important whenever you visit a sushi restaurant in Japan that you follow a few aspects of table decorum.
Never mix your wasabi in with your soy sauce.
Again, I know it tastes great…
but proper way to use wasabi is to apply it directly on top of your sashimi.
Then, as you are dipping it into the soy sauce – be careful not to mix the two flavors.
The reason?
It just looks better that way.
The same rule applies to sushi as well.
Make sure that the rice never touches by flipping the sushi upside down and just lightly dipping the fish.
I’ve found that it’s a lot easier to do if you just use your hand instead of chop sticks!
But that’s more than OK, in fact that is the traditional way to eat sushi through-out Japan.
Your host will be delighted.Enjoy! And remember that Japanese Saki has a way of sneaking up on you.
